QR codes are now an everyday part of our lives, offering quick access to a wide range of information and applications with just a scan. Unfortunately, their rising popularity has also opened the door for scammers to misuse these codes for malicious purposes.
QR code scams, often referred to as "quishing," involve the creation of deceptive QR codes to trick users. Scans of these malicious codes can lead to fraudulent websites, harmful applications, or phishing attacks.
By scanning these fake QR codes, users risk being scammed into revealing sensitive information like credit card details, login credentials, or personal data.
The convenience of QR codes has inspired some cybercriminals to create counterfeit versions, aiming to redirect users to fraudulent websites where they may demand unauthorised payments for app downloads or parking fees.
The danger for users lies not only in being charged for fraudulent transactions but also in potentially exposing their financial information. While these incidents are uncommon, it is crucial for anyone scanning a QR code to be aware of these risks and able to recognise signs of fraud.
How to Identify and avoid QR code scams
- Inspect the QR code before scanning and make sure it does not appear altered or modified in any way, always checking the legitimate code hasn’t been covered with a fraudulent sticker.
- Verify the URL the code takes you to, make sure the destination is the official company website or the official app. Beware, scammers sometimes use very similar URLs to deceive users.
- To protect yourself from QR code scams, it's important to stay alert and follow security guidelines. By using this technology responsibly, you can continue to enjoy its benefits while steering clear of scams set by cybercriminals.
