Partnership strikes following concerns of illegal vapes and cigarettes being sold at Newcastle shops.

Five shops in Newcastle’s West End believed to be linked to the sale of counterfeit cigarettes and illegal vapes saw the robust action of the law following an investigation by the North East Regional Organised Crime Unit (NEROCU) and Newcastle City Council Trading Standards.

Intelligence suggested illegal vapes and cigarettes were being sold at the five premises and, thanks to the operation on Monday (December 9), over £7,000 worth of illegal products were seized in total – some of which were stored in a hidden shelving compartments.

Further enquiries into the premises involved are continuing following the day of action.

NEROCU Detective Sergeant Neil Lovat, said: “This is a hugely positive result for the local community thanks to some fantastic partnership working.

“We know communities are tired of criminal activity taking place in and around this premises, in particular concerning reports of illegal cigarettes and vapes being sold to schoolchildren.

“These illegal products have the potential to be incredibly dangerous and pose significant health risks – so it goes without saying it’s imperative that they are removed from the hands of some of the most vulnerable in our communities.

“This action should act as a deterrent to other premises – if you are involved in criminality, we will take strong and robust action against you.”

Deputy leader of Newcastle City Council, Cllr Alex Hay, who has responsibility for regulatory services, said: “Illegal vapes and tobacco are a scourge in our communities. I’d like to congratulate our trading standards team and the regional organised crime unit for making this considerable seizure. It cannot be overestimated the preventative good this will have on public health.

“Many such seizures like this often start with a tip-off from a concerned member of the public. I’d like to thank all those who come to us in confidence. We will always protect their identity, investigate, and take action when the law is being broken.

"I hope this seizure sends a strong message to anyone who is pedalling illegal vapes and tobacco: we are taking decisive action and will continue to disrupt illegal activities."

Anyone who has any suspicions about crime in their area can contact their local police force or by reporting anonymously through the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
