Drug dealer who played a role in a drug trafficking network is behind bars

Carl Bennett appeared at Newcastle Crown Court today (Thursday), where he was sentenced for a conspiracy which saw him supplying large quantities of Class A drugs across the North East.

The 36-year-old first came to the attention of officers back in 2020 as part of Operation Venetic – an international effort to thwart organised crime.

A team from the North East Regional Organised Crime Unit (NEROCU) swiftly set up an operation to take down Bennett and his illicit business.

A comprehensive file of evidence was produced and on July 8 2020, officers launched a targeted strike, where Bennett was intercepted and arrested by officers.

Bennett, of Bede Crescent, Wallsend, was subsequently charged with Conspiracy to Supply Class A Drugs and on January 22 2023, he appeared at Newcastle Crown Court where he pleaded guilty.

Today, he appeared before the same court and was sentenced to five years and 6 months.

Speaking after sentencing, Detective Chief Inspector Steve Pescod, who was leading on the investigation at the time, said: “This is a great result for policing and for our communities, who are sick of the harm being caused by illegal drugs and the organised criminals operating in our region.

“Bennett believed he was above the law, he operated in the shadows – but however clever these offenders think they are, the law will always catch up with them.

“Thanks to the dedication and professionalism of all the officers involved, a detailed case was presented before the courts leaving Bennett little choice but to admit his guilt.

“The North East is no place for drug dealers – our forces and partners are committed to tackling illegal supply as part of the wider Operation Sentinel, our continued activity to dismantle serious and organised crime.”
