Former prison officer jailed following investigation into corruption at HMP Altcourse

A former prison officer has today (Monday 30 June) been sentenced at Liverpool Crown Court following an investigation by the NWROCU’s Prison Intelligence Unit into corrupt activity at HMP Altcourse.

Barbara Peters, 57, of Mersey Road, Crosby was sentenced to 10 months’ imprisonment after pleading guilty to conspiracy to convey List B articles into a prison.

Operation Canton, launched in June 2023, uncovered that Peters had smuggled mobile phones into HMP Altcourse, concealing them in her bra in exchange for cash payments, including one payment of £2,000. Her actions were part of a wider investigation into the supply of contraband into the facility.

No prisoners were charged in connection with this investigation.

Detective Inspector Brian Morley from the NWROCU’s Prison Intelligence Unit said:

"This case highlights our commitment to rooting out corruption within the prison system. The actions of Barbara Peters undermined the safety and integrity of HMP Altcourse, and today’s sentencing sends a clear message that such behaviour will not be tolerated."
