Thanks to officer from the North East Regional Organised Crime Unit (NEROCU), two men believed to be involved in a large-scale Courier Fraud operation have been arrested today (Thursday).
Courier fraud is a deceptive scam where fraudsters impersonate authority figures, such as police officers or bank officials, to scam and manipulate victims into handing over money or other valuables.
NEROCU officers were supported by the Yorkshire and Humber Regional Organised Crime Unit (YHROCU) during the execution of the strike.
They carried out a warrant at an address on Gilpin View in Leeds and arrested two men, aged 30 and 48, on suspicion of Conspiracy to Defraud and Money Laundering. They currently remain in police custody while enquiries continue.
NEROCU Detective Constable Sophie Snowdon, part of NEROCU’s Proactive Economic Crime Team, said: “This is just the latest robust action taken against suspected criminals looking to implement and run fraud operations in our region.
“Courier Fraud often targets the most vulnerable in our communities and here at NEROCU we’re committed to dismantling these illegal networks and protecting the public.
“Finally, I would like to thank our partners who have supported this investigation and played a vital role in ensuring the suspects were apprehended.”
Anyone who has any information about criminal activity, can report it to their local police or via the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. Fraud can also be reported to Action Fraud through their website or 0300 123 2040.
