Arrests and seizures have been made as part of a proactive work to tackle drug supply in Newcastle.
As part of Operation Casper, officers executed warrants at a number of addresses across the city yesterday (Tuesday).
A total of nine people were arrested for a variety of drug offences with quantities of Class A heroin and Class B spice uncovered.
The operation forms a multi-agency approach to reducing the number of drugs being dealt in the city.
As well as the arrests, support is being offered to those with drug addiction issues.
Speaking about Operation Casper, Detective Inspector Leonard, from the Regional Organised Crime Unit (NEROCU), said: “This is just the latest example in a long line of excellent police partnership working.
“It is the robust united display of action, like this week, that demonstrate our commitment to tackling illegal drug operations across the North East.
“Work just like this will continue under the banner of Operation Sentinel - our region’s holistic approach to tackling Serious and Organised Crime in all its forms.”
Detective Sergeant Shaun Stokoe, of Northumbria Police, said: “The illegal use of drugs has absolutely no place in our communities and where we are made aware that the dealing of these types of substances is taking place, we will always take the appropriate action.
“This week we have made a total of nine arrests as part of our proactive operation, but work remains very much ongoing.
“We hope that this sends a tough message to those dealing drugs in our towns and cities. Our dedicated team of officers will continue to act on any intelligence provided to make further arrests and seizures in this area.
“As part of the operation we are also linking in with our partnership organisations to assist in offering the right support and help to those have become addicted to these types of drugs after being preyed upon by unscrupulous dealers.
"To anyone who has information about drug supply in their community – no matter how small or insignificant you feel it may be – please let us know so that we can apprehend those responsible and bring them to justice.”
Cllr Adam Walker, Newcastle City Council’s Cabinet member for adult social care, health and prevention, welcomed the latest drug seizures.
“Drugs ruin lives, they hurt families, and they have a serious impact on wider communities,” Cllr Walker said.
“A big part of that is bringing criminals who seek to peddle misery in our communities to justice and this is yet another excellent result for Northumbria Police.
“However, just as important is the work being done to help drug users transform their lives and I would urge anybody who is concerned for a friend or a loved one’s drug use, or for their own wellbeing, to get help from the great drug and alcohol support services we have in Newcastle.”
If you have any information about drug supply, report it to your local police or alternatively, contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously by calling 0800 555 111.
