Police and Leeds University Join Forces to Protect Students from Fraud

Officers from the Yorkshire & Humber Regional Organised Crime Unit are teaming up with Leeds University by hosting a ‘Cyber Safe Day’ to raise awareness about staying safe online. 

The event, the first of its kind in the region, will take place next Monday (29 April) at the Smith Riley theatre at Leeds University, with an aim of advising and educating students on how to recognise a scam and to stay safe online. 

There will be a number of activities for students to try out to improve their fraud awareness, such as the Cyber Escape Room challenge and the new Cyber Blue Light van, as well as information stands.  

Other agencies will also be exhibiting at the event, including Crimestoppers, the British Army, Virgin Money, Leeds Building Society, West Yorkshire Police and West Yorkshire Trading Standards. 

Andy Fox, Counter Fraud Coordinator for the Yorkshire & Humber Regional Organised Crime Unit, said: “Students are particularly targeted by fraudsters who will bombard them with fake job adverts, get rich quick schemes and other scams which result in students losing several thousands of pounds and unable to continue their studies.  

“We hope this event will educate students in an interesting and interactive way about the dangers of fraud, how to spot a fraud and how to stay safe.”
