Man jailed for role in UK-wide exploitation ring

A man who played a key role in a UK-wide human trafficking network has today been sentenced at Bolton Crown Court today (20 June) for his involvement in the sexual exploitation of vulnerable women.

Laszlo Matus, 53, from Hungary was sentenced to seven years after being found guilty of:

    • Conspiracy to arrange or facilitate the travel of others with a view to them being exploited.
    • Conspiracy to control prostitution for gain.
    • Conspiracy to conceal, disguise, convert, transfer or remove criminal property.

Matus acted as the “right-hand man” to convicted traffickers Attila Angyal and Melinda Petrovics, who were jailed in December 2024 for a combined total of over 13 years. Matus’s primary role was to live with the victims, monitor their movements, and transport them between towns and cities including Bolton, Blackburn, Preston, Oldham, and Birmingham. The women were advertised for sexual services online, and payments were made into Matus’s bank account before being forwarded to Angyal.

The investigation, led by NWROCU in partnership with Greater Manchester Police, Lancashire Constabulary, West Midlands Police, TOEX, and several safeguarding organisations, uncovered a network of brothels and a pattern of exploitation that spanned multiple regions.

Detective Sergeant Jamie Illingworth of NWROCU said:

“Laszlo Matus was a trusted enabler of this criminal enterprise, ensuring the victims remained under control and continued to generate profit for the ringleaders. His conviction and sentencing mark another significant step in dismantling this network and securing justice for the victims.

“We are grateful for the bravery of the women who came forward and the tireless work of our officers and partners. This case demonstrates our continued commitment to tackling modern slavery and protecting those most at risk.”

The victims, all Hungarian nationals, have since been safeguarded and are receiving ongoing support.
